SWAT 4: another lithtech based game with coop?

Check out this review, it appears to affirm the marketing literature regarding all the SP missions being playable in COOP mode. Some 13 missions, I think, if I read correctly. I managed to snag the free demo disk at Fry's. Sadly, the DEMO is SP ONLY, but I will let you all know what I think about the game play.

Is anyone else interested in trying this out if the demo seems cool?

The publisher is Sierra, and the CD splash screen has monolith's name on it.

Re:SWAT 4: another lithtech based game with coop?

I just got done talking to one of our IT doods about this game and he tells me this game is the shiznit. It does have a very formidable Coop mode where you can play every single player mission.

From his descriptions, the AI is Uber Smart and actually spawn in different parts of the map everytime the map is run..keeping the guesswork to a maximum.

I guess he was able to determine from the volume of drool I was producing while my mouth was hanging open that I was interested, which is why he offered to make me a "demo" copy of his game Evil or Very Mad

Not sure Ill get to it over the next few weeks ( got this wedding/honeymoon thing going on....sheesh the interuptions I have to endure!) but I will definetly report my findings in the details we are all expecting to read.

So, last night I did manage to get a little time to toy with the SWAT 4 demo. It is a pretty good looking game, with challenging AIs. In the SP missions, you lead a team of (at least) 4 other officers. You can view their head cams, and assign them in separate teams of two. This is great for some tactical situations where you need to take two routes at once to head off the bad guys. You can take the default loadout or select individual loadouts for each person on your team. I have read that in some levels, one of your team can be a sniper who waits outside the hot zone and watches for BG's. The sniper will alert you if he (or she? not sure if any of the models are female) sees anything interesting. You can then switch to his view and take the shots yourself. I haven't had an opportunity to try this yet, but it sounds pretty cool.

I have only played the first mission. I expect the demo comes with more, and they are played in sequence. I liked what I saw, although at least once I "finished" the mission, except that I had "misplaced" 3 of the BG's weapons, which you must retrieve before the mission completes. I gave up and restarted, and got my a55 kicked every time after that. So, I've only been able to see the one mission in the demo.

One refreshing feature is that the mission is different each time due to the differing spawn points and disposition of the BG's and hostages. For example, you might get a map spawned with mostly "compliant" BG's and "hostile" hostages! So, you may not need to kill any of the BG's and may need to cuff one or more of the hostages! Or, you may get a mix of compliant and defiant BG's and relatively "calm" hostages who just cower in the corner. Also, the loadout of the BG's is different, too. One time they all had pistols (varying kinds) and another time at least one of them had an automatic of some kind. I don't know what kind because I told one of my men to retrieve it while I proceeded to get my head blown off in the next room. Smile

One of the other nice features is that your AI cohorts have attitudes, giving them a bit of depth. For example, if you order them to do something and you are standing in their way, they will tell you so with varying degrees of annoyance. Also, when they pick up the perps' weapons they may make comments about them if they are ... inferior. "You call that a gun? What is that?" or "Pea-shooter secured."

All in all, I'm pretty impressed. I'm very annoyed that you have to secure the weapons because the perps may drop them and run. Or they may run, drop them, and run some more. So there's really no telling where the guns will end up and you have get them all to finish the mission. Worse still, the first level is very dark with most of the light source coming from SWATlights glaring through windows, and your M4A1 muzzle-mounted flash light is little help. To the developer's credit, the light sources are very believable in this way, and the game really does look great.

I haven't yet tried shooting windows or cars, but I shot a couple of the video games in the break room. They make the right noise but don't change visibily. That doesn't really bother me but it will bother some people.

Does anyone have the full version of this game and have you played the online COOP missions? I'm not yet convinced on this one, especially because of the "find the weapons" b/s but it does seem like it would be fun in COOP mode. Also, some people really tend to like games that tell a story, even as a shooter, and a few reviewers have noted that as a weak point: the missions are not inter-related beyond being SWAT missions set in the same town.

Looking forward to hearing from others on this one, and playing a bit more before passing judgement, but it does look promising.

Picked this bad boy up at

Picked this bad boy up at Walmart last night for $29 and let me tell you, I havent Jones'd to get home from work to play a game like this since Ms. Archer was a callin my name. It is true Coop where you and your online team mates ( I think 5 per squad is the magic number ) enter into unrelated scenarios where some morally challanged dood has done some bad stuff. You have control to pick your loadout and equipment as well as the ability to go non lethal ( VERY HARD TO DO ) with a pain ball gun loaded with pepper balls and a tazer, or lethal with a wide array of tacticle weapons. if you decide lethal you actually lose team points at the end of the round for unauthorized use of deadly force. As you run throught the scenario with your team, you must report secured hostages, dead/injured badguys, dead/injured squad mates, as well as all BG weapons..or the mission doesnt end.

AI is decent....very stubborn...but decent. It is probably the most realistic tactical game Ive played to date. For example....
SMG your weapon of choice?....If you fired 6 rounds off and decide to reload to make sure youre good to go for the next firefight, you dont simply pack 6 more rounds into your clip. You remove the light clip and pocket it for use later on. Doesnt sound like much but it teaches you how to manage your ammo. Oh..heres another dose of realism. If you empty the clip so that there is no ammo in the chamber of your weapon, it takes you longer to reload than if you reload a partial clip because in addition to changing clips you have to chamber a round.

This game will be my "happy place" game for a while...love to see you doods in a server somewhere to explore. The only down side to this game that Ive run across so far is...I think they must be using the HalfeLife 2 engine..or some form of it...because......after about 2 hours of gaming..I........gulp....get...slightly....nauseous

Ok, so if you are really

Ok, so if you are really playing this, where will I find you?

I think therefore I nolf.

Hmmm...good question

I havent been able to find a utility that allows you to search for players ( like the Nova world servers let you do ), so I suppose the next best thing to do is drop into the TEP Team Speak Server...if Im playing MP SWAT4, Im using teamspeak to yell out things like..."GORF...CLEAR" , and "TWO BG's ARMED WITH MASKS", and the ever popular, "THAT SOB SHOT ME IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD WHILE I WAS CUFFING A CIVI"

Smile

And lets not forget my

And lets not forget my favorite from the very buggy demo... "That bastard disintegrated his sidearm when he died." cate cate cate is great

I think therefore I nolf.

do you still play this?

Was thinking about adding to my wish list but if nobody is playing I may try to find out something else to buy.

I think therefore I nolf.

hmm....

well if SWAT4 is anything like SWAT3 then i should be able to do a 1 man slaughter no prob(got SWAT3 the day it came out and have played it almost an 1 hour a week since then). Ill fill ya in if i grab it.
