Nolf and other games under XP SP2?

Heya,

So I read somewhere that Micro$haft is forcing $P2 on us sometime around tax day (nice timing, ar$ehole$) and I was wondering if anyone here has successfully weathered the SP2 upgrade, and been able to keep playing?

Has anyone found a decent resource they can personally recommend on how to keep gaming (and iTunes, woot!) after SP2?

Thanks!

Re:Nolf and other games under XP SP2?

I updated to SP2 a few months ago, and while I havent been in a NOLF or AVP server, I have been living on Nova World servers as well as HL2 and Doom3 games without problem.

I will tell you that SP2 makes it almost impossible to port forward ( and I am running a legal copy of port magic ) because even though you shut off the IE firewall....it still blocks ports....even if you forward them through IE.

hrm. when i think of port forwarding, i think of that as a feature of either a tool like ssh, which the os firewall would have to actively block, or of the router, which the os has no control over (and again would have to actively block the applications use of ports).

so, when i read what you wrote, it sounds like even telling XP not to block ports, results in some blocked ports? are you sure it isn't your antivirus / internet security suite doing this (i.e. trend micro or norton or something?)

i guess i don't fully understand what you wrote. or maybe i fear that i do... that would suck.

Yea...Port magic is a software package that gets into your router firewall and makes it very easy to run server applications.

When I run a server app....I have port forwarded the ports I know its running on ( since Port Magic tells me which they are ) and I have shut off the entire Nortons Suite as well as shut off the Windows firewall...and that was only after I told the windows firewall to forward the ports being used by the server...because I read somewhere that even though you shut the Windows firewall off....the firewall security issues are still in place.

Im treading water here...learning as I go...so I may have some misconceptions about what I am observing. All I can tell you is that Port Magic tells me its letting traffic out on the ports the server app is using and Ive got everything else shut off.....and I get nada.

suckage. Sad that doesn't sound promising.
