Chernobyl "dead zone"

This is an amazing site where a Motorcycle riding woman posts a narrative documentary on a trip she makes to ground zero. Sort of puts the down side of Nuclear energy into perspective. Wow!....I mean...I knew about this...but I never KNEW about this. Amazing how the human race is about tragedies of this prorportion if its not in our own back yard. When is the last time you heard anyone talk about Chernobyl? How long will it take us to forget about the Trade Center?

Re:Chernobyl "dead zone"

I've listen to lectures on this during one of my classes. Really makes you think, Do the ends justify the means?

Re:Chernobyl "dead zone"

Its so surreal, its almost like looking at stills from a movie set

Re:Chernobyl "dead zone"

Back in the early nineties I watched a 60 Minutes documentary, by Steve Kroft. It was horribly eerie and dark expose. They played a melancholy Russian requiem in the background as the camera showed all the abandoned villages and dwellings. It was very surreal. Up until I had watched this story on TV, I had no idea of the shear depth and magnitude of the disaster. An area the size of a small US State that is completely uninhabited, almost takes your breath away when you ponder that in your mind. Shocked

Chernobyl was the byproduct of a failed political system and human arrogance. I shudder to think what will happen if (or should I say...WHEN) terrorists successfully detonate a nuclear device in an American city. The same thing could happen right here in the US. The destruction of New York City and the subsequent contaminated landscape laying abandoned, frozen in time forever.

Eek. See now you've gone and depressed me. I need a drink.

did the lectures mention the fact that the site was undergoing a test at the time, and that because they had let the energy level drop too low to run the test, they disabled EVERY automatic safeguard to bring the core back up to the right temp so they could run the test?

with the safeguards enabled the disaster would not have happened. a lot of people think there was something wrong with the reactor but as usual a perfectly working piece of equipment is catastrophically destroyed by fuckwits at the helm.

the pics are great, i saw them a few weeks ago. so... who wants to piece together a CJ map for the vespa? Smile
